Strands of Strength: Hair Care & Styling Tips for Life with Lupus

by | Aug 11, 2025

Lupus can impact your hair in a few different ways. Many people with lupus experience hair loss or thinning hair, which can be both physically and emotionally challenging. One common cause is skin problems related to lupus—such as rashes or sores on the scalp—that can lead to hair loss in those areas. In some cases, the hair may not grow back if the skin is scarred.

Another factor is the medications used to treat lupus. Drugs like steroids and immunosuppressives, while important for controlling the disease, can have side effects that include hair thinning or shedding.

If you start to notice hair loss or thinning, it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor. They can help you figure out what might be causing it and suggest ways to manage it, including changes to your treatment plan or tips for keeping your hair as healthy as possible.

Supporting Hair and Scalp Health

There are several ways to maintain healthy hair and scalp when you’re living with lupus. While not all hair loss can be reversed—especially if there’s scarring—there are steps you can take to protect the hair you have and support overall scalp health.

If lupus-related skin problems are causing your hair loss, your doctor can prescribe treatments to help manage those symptoms and protect your hair. If hair loss is a side effect of your lupus medications, your doctor may be able to adjust your treatment plan to help.

When it comes to hair care, try these tips:

  • Use gentle hair products, like baby shampoo, to avoid irritating your scalp. Check with your doctor before trying new products.
  • Avoid heat and chemicals, including curlers, hot combs, and chemical treatments, which can weaken hair and cause further damage.
  • Be careful with hairstyles—make sure braids, buns, and ponytails aren’t too tight, as pulling on the scalp can lead to additional hair loss.

It’s also important to be cautious with over-the-counter hair loss products and supplements. Treatments like Rogaine® typically don’t work for lupus-related hair loss, and some supplements might interfere with your lupus medications. Always check with your doctor before trying anything new.

While these changes won’t regrow lost hair, especially in scarred areas, they can help maintain the health of your remaining hair and possibly encourage regrowth in areas without scarring.

Using Style to Cope with Hair Loss

In addition to identifying ways to promote scalp and hair health, there are many stylish and empowering ways to wear your hair—or cover it—when living with lupus. Accessories like scarves from our partner Broadus Collection by Snoop Dogg and Shante can help you feel both comfortable and confident.

One casual and trendy option is the classic bandana style. Simply fold your Broadus Collection scarf into a triangle, place the longest side across your forehead, and tie the ends at the back of your head. This versatile look is perfect for outdoor activities or a laid-back day out, while maintaining a fashionable edge.

For a bold and empowering style, the fashion headwrap is a powerful choice. Start by placing the center of the scarf at the nape of your neck, then bring the ends up and over to the top of your head. Twist them together and tuck them under the wrap for a secure fit. This look showcases the beautiful patterns of the scarf, adding a flare to your outfit.

And for those experiencing hair loss, Broadus Collection scarves are a compassionate choice. To wear the scarf comfortably, start by folding it into a triangle. Place the longest side along your forehead and tie the ends at the nape of your neck. This style provides full coverage while remaining lightweight and breathable. The ultra-silky fabric is gentle on sensitive skin, and the vibrant patterns help boost confidence and add a touch of personal flair.

Broadus Collection, founded by Snoop Dogg and Shante, was inspired by their daughter, Cori’s battle with lupus. When Cori was diagnosed with lupus at a young age, she didn’t let it break her spirit, instead, she began to wrap her head in beautiful scarves. In support, Shante, Snoop, and the whole Broadus family started wrapping their heads alongside her, making headscarves a family staple and a fashion statement.

Living with lupus can come with challenges like hair loss or thinning, but there are many ways to care for your scalp and feel confident in your appearance. Understanding the causes—whether from skin issues or medication side effects—can help you work with your doctor to find the best approach to protect and maintain your hair. Simple changes to your hair care routine and avoiding harsh styling practices can go a long way in preserving hair health.

Additionally, embracing creative styling options—like the Broadus Collection scarves—can offer both comfort and self-expression. Whether you prefer a casual bandana look, a fashion statement headwrap, or full coverage, these styles offer practical and empowering ways to take control of your look. With the right care and a bit of creativity, you can support your hair health and feel good about how you present yourself, no matter where you are in your lupus journey.

August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and encourage conversations around the impact of hair loss.
