Questions to Ask Your Doctor Before Taking a Biologic

by | Mar 2, 2026

If you’ve been taking medication for your lupus, but are still having flares, your doctor
may prescribe biologic therapy as part of your treatment. Biologics are treatments
designed to help manage lupus using proteins and antibodies from living organisms.
They may help manage disease activity by reducing your immune system’s attack on
the body. Before you begin taking biologic therapy, it’s important to ask questions. Here
are some questions you can use to start a conversation with your doctor.

Why do you think this medication is a good choice for me?
What side effects can I expect?
Are there any serious complications from taking this medication?
Do I need any vaccines before beginning the medication?
Do I need any regular screening tests (such as blood or urine) while taking this
medication?
How is this medication administered?
If it is self-administered, can your office provide training?
How is the medication stored?
What should I do if I miss a dose?
When should I NOT take my medication?
How long will it take for the medication to begin working?
How much will this medication cost?
Are there assistance programs to help me cover the cost?

Taking any new treatment for your lupus can be scary, but being prepared will help you
feel more in control of your health and your body. It is also recommended that you reach

patients, find support, and get empowered by learning more about lupus.
