Karleen’s journey with lupus began in the summer of 1983 when she received her lupus diagnosis, although her symptoms first began appearing as early as 1982 during her freshman year of college. Mouth sores and knee swelling were the initial signs, gradually escalating over 18 months until she received a lupus diagnosis and immediately began treatment.
Initially frightened and angered by the diagnosis, Karleen was unfamiliar with the disease and its implications. Looking back, she realized the journey ahead was unclear. Yet, with unwavering support from her family and friends, Karleen learned to navigate life with lupus, maintaining a full-time job while cherishing her husband of 36 years, her son, and a newfound daughter-in-law.
“To be honest I look back and I truly did not comprehend the effect it would have in my life. I have always tried to look forward. With the help of my family and friends I have learned to live with Lupus.”
Amidst the challenges, Karleen discovered the Virtual 6 Challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeking connection and support, she embraced the virtual challenge as a fun way to unite with loved ones while supporting a meaningful cause. With her competitive spirit, Karleen’s team, Team Eads, consistently excelled in logging miles and raising funds. The support from family and friends over the past four decades has been Karleen’s anchor, providing unwavering encouragement and love throughout her journey.
“I fell into the Virtual 6 Challenge when COVID hit, thinking it would be a fun way to connect with family and friends and raise money for a good cause. This will be our fourth Virtual Six and they all have been a great experience. Team Eads can be a little competitive with miles logged and money raised, which makes it even more fun. We are ready for another year!”
Karleen’s mission extends beyond her personal journey; she strives to raise awareness about lupus. Recognizing the lack of understanding surrounding the condition, she advocates for increased education and research. With a hopeful outlook, Karleen eagerly awaits advancements in treatments and medications, longing for improved outcomes for those battling lupus. Engaging in initiatives like the Virtual 6 Challenge has brought joy and unity to her circle and provided a platform for advocacy and education. Together, Team Eads is making strides, one step at a time, in the fight against lupus.
On average, it takes 6 years for someone to receive a correct diagnosis of lupus after they first notice symptoms. Together, we can take steps to change this. Help us reduce the time to diagnosis by raising awareness and funds for critical research by joining us for the Team Make Your Mark Virtual 6 Challenge to complete 6 miles in 6 days between June 21-26, however and wherever you choose.
