Jessica was thriving – she had moved into her first home, a cozy space that mirrored her vibrant personality and aspirations. Her career was flourishing, and she embraced her independence and personal growth confidently.
But life threw an unexpected challenge her way. Just as she settled into this new chapter, Jessica began experiencing extreme fatigue, unexplained fevers, and persistent chest pain. Her once energetic life was clouded by discomfort and uncertainty. After years of relentless symptoms and countless doctor visits, Jessica finally received a diagnosis: lupus.
For her mother, Kim Harris, the diagnosis was both a relief and a source of deep concern. It provided answers but also raised countless questions.
“I didn’t know where to turn or how to come to terms with the realities of my daughter’s chronic illness and its progression,” Kim shared.
Determined to find guidance and support, Kim turned to the internet, where she discovered the Lupus Foundation of America. What she found was more than just information—it was a community. Through the Foundation’s support group program, Kim not only found solace but also a purpose. She helped establish a youth support group and a caregiver group, where she now serves as a facilitator.
For Kim, the caregiver group is more than a meeting—it’s a sanctuary. “It’s a place where shared experiences foster understanding, compassion, and growth. We also talk about caring for ourselves to better care for our loved ones,” she explained.
The Lupus Foundation of America has been a lifeline for Kim and countless others navigating the challenges of lupus.
“When I needed it most, the Foundation was there to help me and continues to provide hope, relief, and support during the most challenging times,” Kim said.
The Lupus Foundation of America’s support groups and other support programs give caregivers and their families the resources they need to focus on what matters most – supporting their loved ones. As Kim reflects on her journey, she shares a heartfelt message: “You give us hope and strength when we need it most. Thank you.”
Whether you are a caregiver, family member, friend or you are living with lupus, the Lupus Foundation of America has a support group for you, along with countless other resources and support programs to help you navigate your journey with lupus.
