An Urgent Request For Support

by | Apr 28, 2025

Lupus is a complex, often misunderstood autoimmune disease that affects over 1.5 million Americans—and tens of thousands of them live right here in Ohio. For many, daily life is a battle against chronic pain, fatigue, organ damage, and emotional stress. Yet, despite its impact, lupus remains underfunded and under-recognized. That’s why state funding for the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter is not just important—it’s essential.

What the Greater Ohio Chapter Does

The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter (LFA-GOC) serves as a vital support system for individuals and families affected by lupus across the state. For over 47 years we have helped patients gain access to:

  • Free lupus education programs
  • Support groups and patient navigators
  • Public awareness campaigns
  • Lupus-specific advocacy and legislative outreach
  • Research collaboration and promotion of clinical trials

These programs empower patients to better understand and manage their disease, while also working to increase early diagnosis, reduce disparities, and improve quality of life.

Why State Funding Matters

Currently,  the chapter’s work is powered by a combination of private donations and grants—our funding provided by the Ohio Department of Health plays a critical role in fulfilling our mission.  Here’s how:

1. Improved Access to Care and Education

Continued state support we can continue to provide free educational workshops and outreach events in underserved communities. This means more people can learn to identify early symptoms and seek timely treatment, potentially preventing irreversible damage.

2. Support for Underserved Populations

Lupus disproportionately affects women of color and low-income individuals—two groups that often face barriers to healthcare. State support helps the chapter provide resources tailored to these populations, including translated materials and community health partnerships.

3. Mental Health Resources

Living with lupus can lead to anxiety, depression, and isolation. Continued state funding means that we can continue to offer mental health services, peer-to-peer support programs, —services that are currently in high demand but limited in reach.

4. Local Research Collaboration

Ohio is home to world-class medical centers. Continued funding helps foster more local research initiatives that focus on lupus care innovations and potential cures—right here in our own state.

What You Can Do

Change doesn’t happen without advocacy. You can make a difference by:

  • Contacting your state representatives – Let them know why lupus support matters to you.
  • Joining a local advocacy day – Participate in efforts organized by the LFA-GOC.
  • Sharing your story – Personal experiences can help lawmakers understand the real-life impact of lupus.
  • Spreading awareness – Use your voice on social media to encourage others to take action.

Final Thoughts

State funding for our chapter isn’t just about dollars—it’s about dignity, health equity, and giving people living with lupus the tools they need to thrive. By advocating together, we can create a future where no Ohioan faces lupus alone.

Stand with us. Speak up. And help secure the support that lupus patients need and deserve.
