Can wearing a face mask cause lupus skin lesions?

by | Aug 8, 2022

It’s hard to say if a mask is causing your lesions or if a mask is causing an irritation to your skin. If you’re having a flare, it’s important to talk with your doctor to determine the cause of your lupus skin lesions and discuss ways to minimize the reaction you are having.

A few things to think about as far as the mask fabric irritating your skin:

  • Are you using disposable masks or a cloth mask?
  • If you are using a cloth mask, are you washing/changing it frequently to limit the oils and bacteria from your skin that accumulate on the mask?
  • Another possibility is that the laundry detergent being used to wash the mask is causing some type of irritation to your skin, triggering a response from your lupus.
